Christian Salvesen & Co. set up in
Leith in 1872, initially as shipping agents but soon developed significant whaling interests. In 1907, they set up a base on the island of South Georgia in the South Atlantic which they named Leith Harbour. This grew to become the largest whaling station in the world, employing many men brought from Scotland. The whaling connection is remembered by an old harpoon mounted at The Shore in
Leith.
