Located a mile (1.5 km) north of the centre of Wick, Wick Airport is operated by the government-owned Highland and Islands Airports Limited and has the International Air Transport Association (IATA) location code "WIC". The airport offers scheduled flights to Kirkwall in Orkney and Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Inverness with through connections to London and beyond.
An original grass strip opened in 1933 and was used by Captain E.E. Fresson's Highland Airways. In 1939, this strip was taken over by the Air Ministry and an air base, RAF Wick, constructed. The runway was designed to accommodate larger planes as part of Britain's northern defences during the Second World War and seems oversized for the current aircraft which use the airport.
