Hermiston House

A modest B-listed mansion in W Edinburgh, Hermiston House lies just to the northwest of Long Hermiston, to the south of the Union Canal and 1½ miles (2.5 km) north of Currie. Now comprising a two-storey baronial mansion, Hermiston began as the dower house for the Riccarton Estate, built in 1633. It was remodelled by the architect William Burn (1789 - 1870), who lived here c.1830. Burn inserted a gargoyle between the gables that came from Corstorphine Parish Church, which he restored in 1828. Restored and modernised by Esmé Gordon in 1955, it now forms the residence for the Principal of Heriot-Watt University.
