River Nith at Penpont

A river of SW Scotland, the Nith rises in East Ayrshire between Enoch Hill and Prickeny Hill at an altitude of 425m (1400 feet) above sea-level. It flows generally southeastwards for 71 miles (112 km) before falling into the Solway Firth 14 miles (22 km) south of Dumfries where it forms a 10 mile (16 km) estuary. Its principal tributaries are the Afton Water, Kello Water, Crawick Water, Euchan Water, Mennock Water, Enterkin Burn, Carron Water, Cample Water, Scar Water, Duncow Burn, Cluden Water, Cargen Pow and New Abbey Pow.
