A marine aquarium which occupies the former Battery Quarry under the Forth Rail Bridge in North Queensferry (Fife), Deep Sea World is a commercial tourist attraction, together with an educational and conservation facility. Opened in 1994, it features an underwater viewing tunnel and audio-visual presentations. More than 400,000 visitors per year descend below the car park and walk through a series of displays and aquaria, which include touching pools where handling of various sea-creatures is encouraged. Divers regularly feed fish and sharks in the large aquarium. Successful breeding programmes include Smooth Hound Sharks and Angel Sharks.
The centre runs various educational events including shark awareness courses for qualified divers. A seal sanctuary opened here in 2005.
Floated on the stock market in 1996, the aquarium was taken over by a Spanish resort group in 2002. The operating company, Deep Sea Leisure, now also runs another sea-life centre in Chester (England).
