A well-sheltered fishing and leisure harbour located a quarter-mile (0.5 km) southeast of the village of Lochboisdale in South Uist (Outer Hebrides), Lochboisdale Harbour was developed between 2012 and 2015. Opened by Deputy First Minister John Swinney, the harbour was a major investment intended to augment the original facilities, which comprised a modest fishing and steamer pier built in the 19th C. and extended in the 20th C as a linkspan ferry berth. Developed by the community organisation Stòras Uibhist and built at a cost £10 million, the harbour comprises a pair breakwaters and a causeway linking Rubha Bhuailt and the island of Gasay. A further causeway was built to connect the new harbour to the old piers and the heart of Lochboisdale, together with a new road across Rubha Bhuailt. The harbour includes a fishery pier, slipway, pontoon berths and facilities for fishermen and leisure craft. The harbour offers a commercial area providing opportunities for engineering, light industries and maritime services, and the project has also provided access to land for community, residential and commercial development.
