A modern halt on the Borders Railway, Galashiels Railway Station lies on a steeply sloping site next to the A7 road, to the north of the town centre. It opened with the line in 2015. Built by BAM Nuttall, it comprises a single platform on a single-track line. It is operated by ScotRail, with around 210,000 passengers in its first year a number which had risen to 346,264 in 2016-17. The original Galashiels Station opened nearby in 1849 but closed with the demise of the Waverley Line in 1969. The new station links to bus services via The Interchange, which lies opposite. Galashiels is preceded by Stow, 5½ miles (9 km) to the north northwest, while the next station is Tweedbank, 2¼ miles (3.5 km) to the east southeast.
