Portobello Cemetery is located on the south side of Milton Road East in Joppa. It opened in 1877, having been laid out by architect Robert Paterson (1825-89), and contains many fine Victorian monuments. Portobello has been extended twice and now extends to 3.26 ha (8 acres). It incorporates Edinburgh's Muslim cemetery and includes twenty-six commonwealth war graves. It is owned and managed by the City of Edinburgh Council.
Notable burials include Ian Charleson (1949-90), star of the film Chariots of Fire, theatre impresario Sir Edward Moss (1852 - 1912), Sir Ivison Macadam (1894 - 1974), who was the first Director-General of the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House) and the founding President of the National Union of Students, and Lieutenant-Colonel William Robertson (1865 - 1949), who won the Victoria Cross in 1899 for bravery during the Boer War.
