Mary of Gueldres

Queen. Mary was the daughter of Arnold, Duke of Gueldres, from Burgundy in France. Mary married King James II (1430-60) at Holyrood Abbey in Edinburgh (1449) and went on to bear him eight children. She acted as Regent for a time during the minority of their son James III, her husband having died as the result of an accident at the age of only 30.

Mary was a devout Christian and founded Trinity College Church on Edinburgh's Royal Mile (c.1460), of which only the apse remains as the Brass Rubbing Centre.

She died at Ravenscraig Castle (Fife) and was buried in Trinity College Church, although her coffin was moved to Holyrood Abbey in 1848.
