Episcopalian clergyman and political campaigner. Born in Paisley, Wright was educated at the Grammar School there, followed by the Universities of Glasgow and Cambridge. He was a supporter of nuclear disarmament who went on to work in India and at Coventry Cathedral, where he was appointed Canon Residentiary in 1974. Wright returning the Scotland in 1981, becoming a campaigner for Scottish devolution. In 1989, he was invited to Chair the Scottish Constitutional Convention which paved the way for a devolution referendum in 1997 and the establishment of a Scottish Parliament two years later.
Wright was awarded a CBE in 2000, stood unsuccessfully for the Scottish Parliament in 2001 and 2003, but subsequently retired to England.
