A settlement in Badenoch, Highland Council Area, Dalwhinnie lies at the head of Glen Truim and near the north end of Loch Ericht. Formerly a meeting point for cattle drovers, Dalwhinnie became a road junction during the period of military road building in the 1720s and a bridge was built over the River Truim here. With the opening of the Inverness and Perth Junction (later Highland) Railway's main line in 1863, a station was opened and Dalwhinnie became a centre for the shipment of sheep to be taken south for sale. A distillery, built here in 1898 at the height of a whisky boom, was the first in Scotland to become American-owned.
