A small hamlet of The Glenkens in Dumfries and Galloway, Parton lies midway along the northern shore of Loch Ken, 6 miles (10 km) northwest of Castle Douglas. Its neat row of Arts and Crafts style terraced houses was laid out in 1901 as an estate village for Parton House which was demolished in 1964. In the churchyard of Parton Parish Church (1832) stand the remains of an earlier church and a monument to the physicist James Clerk Maxwell whose country house was at nearby Glenlair. Also built in 1901 is Parton Privy, a listed octagonal red-brick building which served as outside toilets for eight of the cottages.
