A farm in SE Fife, Balbuthie lies a mile (1.5 km) east of Kilconquhar and 1¼ miles (2 km) west of St Monans. Extending to 161 ha (400 acres), this is the property of John Bell Cameron (b. 1939), credited as the largest sheep farmer in Europe until he sold five of his seven farms in 2006. Stocked with 150 Simmental-Luing cows, a herd of pedigree Herefords and a breeding flock of sheep, Balbuthie is now operated as an 'open farm' with twice-daily tours for the public. Cameron has announced his intention to build a shed on the farm to provide a permanent home for his two steam locomotives; the Great Marquis and the Union of South Africa.
