New Pitsligo

Aberdeenshire

A village in the Buchan district of Aberdeenshire, New Pitsligo lies amidst fertile farmland on the eastern slope of Turlundie Hill and on the A 950 road from Peterhead to Banff. Founded by Sir William Forbes of Monymusk in the 18th Century, the present village was built around the smaller hamlet of Cyaak, a name still used by the native 'Cyaakers' of New Pitsligo. At its peak of prosperity the village had a population of 2000 inhabitants and claimed to be the largest village in Scotland. It then had four churches, two of which survive, and earned a reputation for the production of lace, a manufacture introduced to the village in the 1820s. The art of lacemaking continues to be passed down from one generation to the next without written instructions. Nearby are the Northfield Farm Museum and Bonnykelly Dam with trout fishing. The village has a bowling green and hosts a Visual Arts Exhibition and Highland Dancing Festivals annually.
