A residential suburb of Dundee adjacent to Balgay Hill. For many years a separate town, Lochee developed during the 18th Century in association with handloom weaving and in the 19th century as a centre of spinning, bleaching, dyeing and linen manufacture. By the mid-19th century, Lochee was known as Little Tipperary due to the large number of Irish workers who came here to work in the jute mills. The Camperdown Works of Messrs Cox Brothers, built in 1849-64, was said to be the largest jute factory in the world with 820 power-looms, 150 hand-looms and 5000 employees. Cox's Stack, the 86-m (282-foot) high campanile-style factory chimney, survives. The Lochee Park was gifted by the Cox family to the city in 1871 for the benefit of mill workers. Sandstone from a quarry at Lochee was used in the construction of Dundee Harbour.
