A picturesque village with a school in southeast Aberdeenshire, Drumlithie lies 7 miles (11 km southwest of Stonehaven at the northern end of the Howe of the Mearns. In the 18th century the village had a thriving handloom weaving industry, a reminder of this period being the weavers' bell tower of 1777 whose bell called the weavers to work. A large standing stone which, legend has it, must be kept whitewashed at all times, stands in a field at nearby Mill of Mondynes, allegedly marking the spot where King Duncan II was slain.
