An affluent suburb of Aberdeen, Mannofield lies 2 miles (3 km) southwest of the city centre. The district developed from the later 19th C. between the line of the Deeside Railway and Great Western Road, although the majority of the housing stock is semi-detached bungalows dating from the 1930s. Aberdeenshire Cricket Ground is located here. Originally Balmanno's Field, the area takes its name from Robert Balmanno (c.1732 - 1820), who bought land here in 1772 and improved it to create farmland on which he grew strawberries which were exported as far as London. He built Friendville as his home in 1773, which is now B-listed. The missionary Robert Laws was born in Mannofield in 1851.
