A small village in Tweeddale, Walkerburn lies on the north side of the River Tweed where it is joined by the Walker Burn (formerly Priesthope Burn), 2 miles (3 km) east of Innerleithen. It developed in association with the Tweedvale and Tweedholm woollen mills established here in the 1850s and 1860s. Its population of nearly 1300 in 1891 halved during the 20th century as the textile industry declined leaving only a Scottish Museum of Woollen Textiles.
