A former mining village in S Central Fife, Dundonald is one of an agglomeration of settlements known as the A-B-C-D villages; comprising, from north to south, Auchterderran, Bowhill, Cardenden and Dundonald. The first records of coal-mining here date from 1532, but modern pits to the south and west of the village operated into the 1960s.
Cardenden railway station lies immediately to the north of the village.
