Old County of Dunbartonshire

A former county of W Central Scotland, Dunbartonshire lay between the Clyde Estuary, Loch Long and Loch Lomond with a detached part to the northeast of Glasgow between Stirlingshire and Lanarkshire. Its county town was Dumbarton and its total area was 241 sq. miles (624 sq. km), making it the 6th smallest county. In 1974 it was incorporated in Strathclyde Region as Dumbarton District and in the local government reorganisation of 1996 emerged as East Dunbartonshire and West Dunbartonshire Council Areas.
