Europe's Oldest Student Newspaper founded

1887

Europe's oldest student newspaper The Student was founded in Edinburgh by novelist Robert Louis Stevenson in 1887. Over the years, notable figures such as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, David Lloyd George, Winston Churchill and Lord Kitchener have been associated with the paper, while past editors include Gordon Brown and David Steel, and Robin Cook wrote reviews. Despite financial problems in the early 2000s due to the advertising down-turn, the newspaper remains independent. Today it is run by a University of Edinburgh Student Society and is read by more than 30,000 students every week.
