First Air Raid of World War II


1939

The first air raid of World War II was launched on the 16th October, 1939, by German bombers on British warships in the Royal Dockyard at Rosyth, and on the Forth Bridge. The German planes were engaged by RAF Spitfires from 602 Squadron based at Drem and 603 Squadron from Turnhouse and two bombers were shot down. Three ships were damaged and fifteen sailors killed.
