MacAulay Tartan

There appear to be two MacAulay clans originating from Ardencaple, Argyle and Bute, and Lewis in the Western Isles. The MacAulays from Ardencaple were associated with both the MacGregor Clan and the Earls of Lennox. These MacAulays were quick to disassociate themselves from the MacGregor clan when it became outlawed. The last MacAulay chief sold off the clan estates to the Campbells in 1767.

The MacAulays of Lewis claim descent from Norse origins, the name meaning 'Son of Olaf. Donald Camm was one of the more famous chiefs of this clan, with one of his descendants being Thomas Babington Macaulay (1800-59) the famous historian and author of History of England. Thomas was well respected, being raised to the peerage in 1857 as Lord Macaulay.
