A particularly ancient clan closely associated with King Kenneth MacAlpin (Kenneth I) who united Scotland into one kingdom in AD 843. While its origins are lost in time, the clan is certainly of Celtic origin and traditionally held lands around Dunstaffnage in Argyll. The chief was traditionally elected, rather than inherited, but by the 14th century the MacAlpines had no chief and no property. If there was a MacAlpine inheritance, it is through the Royal line of Scotland.
Although there is no official motto or crest, the war-cry Cuimhnich Bàs Ailpein - Remember the Death of Alpin - is associated with the clan.
The most notable member of the clan in modern times was Sir Robert McAlpine (1847 - 1934, who founded the construction company and pioneered the use of concrete.
