A name which spread from England in the 12th C. Another group are said to be descended from Richard Keith (Richard is often shortened to 'Dick'). Keith belonged to the family of the Earls Marischal, and thus the family use the Keith Tartan. Thomas Dickson died in battle with the English in 1307. Robert the Bruce honoured him at Castle Douglas shortly before he was killed.

Dickson is the usual spelling in Scotland, as against Dixon in England.
