The name Innes comes from the area in the district of Elgin in Moray, that was granted to Berowald by Malcolm IV (1141 - 1165) in 1160. Berowald was a Flemish nobleman and it was his grandson Walter that adopted the surname Innes.
Sir Robert Innes, the 20th chief, fought for the royalists in support of Charles II (1630 - 1685). He was a privy councillor and represented Moray in Parliament.
In 1666 Sir James Innes married Lady Margaret Ker and through this union Sir James, the 24th chief and 6th Baronet, became the 5th Duke of Roxburgh.
Sir Guy David Innes-Ker is the 11th Baronet, 10th Duke, but is barred from being the 26th chief due to his double-barrelled surname. He resides at Floors Castle in Kelso.
