Urquhart is derived from the place name Airchart and it is thought that such a place on the Black Isle is the origin of the clan. The Urquharts were sheriffs of Cromarty and defended the area against the English alongside William Wallace. The Urquharts of Cromarty were Royalists and fought for Charles I.
The Urquharts of Craigston were Jacobites and rose to great prominence. Craigston Castle is still in the hands of the family. The title of Urquhart of Urquhart, the chiefly line, is now held by descendants of the Urquharts of Braelangswell who had emigrated to America. They are now established at Castle Craig on the Cromarty Firth.
