Grant Tartan

A name strongly associated with the Badenoch and Strathspey districts in the highlands of Scotland. The family came to Britain during the Norman Conquest, settling first near Nottingham (England) and later moving north. Sir Lawrence le Grant was Sheriff of Inverness in 1285. Grantown-on-Spey was named after Sir William Grant, who built the town (1766).

The Grants of Ballindalloch include General James Grant (1720 - 1806). The Grants of Kilgraston, located southwest of Bridge of Earn (Perth and Kinross), include General Sir James Hope Grant (1808-75) and his brother, painter Sir Francis Grant (1803-78).
