Located at Inveriggan, 1¼ miles (2 km) southeast of Glencoe village, towards the western end of Glencoe, the Glencoe Visitor Centre is owned and operated by the National Trust for Scotland. Opened in 2002, the centre cost £ 3 million and replaced an older centre which had operated further up the glen since the 1970s. The centre includes a variety of exhibitions on Glencoe, together with a viewpoint and tourist facilities.
Supporting the Trust's aims for minimising environmental impact, the buildings are constructed of wood from sustainable forests and elevated above ground-level to minimise disturbance to the soils or ground-water. They are heavily insulated, using sheep's wool rather than man-made materials.
Further, the restaurant on the site uses paper cups and plates (again made from renewable forests) and avoids the use of plastic or items which would require cleaning and risk the washing water polluting the fragile environment.
