Fyrish Hill

(Cnoc Fyrish)

Also known as Cnoc Fyrish, Fyrish Hill rises to 453m (1485 feet) 2 miles (3 km) to the north northeast of Evanton and 2½ miles (4 km) west of Alness in Easter Ross. On its summit is an unusual monument erected in 1785 by General Sir Hector Munro of Novar (1726 - 1805) on his return from India. Said to represent the gates of Negapatnam, an Indian city which Munro had captured from the Dutch in 1781, the monument was designed to provide employment for local people. It now represents a prominent landmark and is B-listed.
