The Knock

A summit and viewpoint lying amongst the Bathgate Hills in West Lothian, 1½ miles (2.5 km) east southeast of Torphichen and a similar distance northeast of Bathgate. The Knock rises to 309m (1015 feet) and was gifted to the people of Bathgate in memory of D.T. Sutherland the Provost of the town between 1881 and 1893, Mrs Isabella Dawson (or Sutherland) and their son R.D. Sutherland, who served as Provost between 1914 and 1922. At its summit is a geographical indicator designed by the noted Scottish surveyor John Mathieson (1855 - 1945) and placed here in 1936.
