Bartholomew House

(Edinburgh Geographical Institute)

The elegant former home of the John Bartholomew & Sons Ltd. map publishing business, the Edinburgh Geographical Institute is situated in the Newington district of South-Central Edinburgh and was converted into prestigious flats, known as Bartholomew House, by the Burrell Company in 1997. Built in 1909 as the offices and printing plant for Bartholomews, the building is fronted by an elegant portico which had been rescued from Dr. John G. Bartholomew's home, the grand Falcon Hall in Morningside, built in 1780 and demolished in 1909.

A plaque commemorating the history of the building was unveiled by the Princess Royal on behalf of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society in 1997.
