Groatay

(Grodaigh)

A small uninhabited island lying to the northeast of North Uist, Groatay (Gael: Grodaigh) rises steeply from the sea to the southwest of Hermetray and 5 miles (8 km) northeast of Lochmaddy. It reaches a height of 33m (108 feet) and extends to 5.6 ha (14 acres). The ruins of Dun Mhic Laitheann (MacLean's Fortress) lie on a rocky islet adjoining Groatay to the southwest.
