West Bay

(Bagh Siar)

A significant bay on the west coast of the island of Vatersay in the Outer Hebrides, West Bay (Gael: Bagh Siar) and Vatersay Bay (to the east) are separated by a narrow low lying isthmus which links the northern and southern sections of the island. The settlement of Vatersay lies immediately to the southeast. The Annie Jane Memorial remembers the tragic loss a ship in the bay in 1853, which drowned 350 people, mostly emigrants, who are buried here. Also buried here are two Hong Kong sailors, Chan Sung and Chung Cheong, who were firemen on the SS Idomeneus which was torpedoed by the German submarine U-67 on 15th September 1917 and beached here to avoid sinking. The ship was later recovered.
