Drone Hill

A low-lying hill which rises to 225m (738 feet) above Coldingham Moor in the Scottish Borders, Drone Hill lies 2½ miles (4 km) east northeast of Grantshouse and 4 miles (6 km) west of Coldingham. This is the site of Highview Caravan Park, formerly Drone Hill Caravan Park, located amongst the remains of an historic military installation. Drone Hill was one of the earliest chain-home radio detection finding (RDF) stations built immediately prior to World War II and using the system developed by Robert Watson-Watt (1892 - 1973). The station comprised four 100-m (330-foot) high masts with supporting buildings and defensive structures. The radar station here was decommissioned in the early 1950s and the masts were demolished.
