Dowanhill

A small residential district in W Glasgow, Dowanhill lies to the south of the Great Western Road, to the east of Hyndland and a quarter-mile (0.5 km) southwest of Kelvinside. Dowanhill Parish Church, with its distinctive spire, was converted to form Cottiers Theatre in 1984. Also located here are the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St. Luke the Evangelist (established in the former Belhaven Church in 1960), Notre Dame High School (opened 1897) and Dowanhill Primary School. The University of Glasgow lies just to the southeast.

In 1869, Jefferson Davis (1808-89), first and only President of the secessionist southern Confederate States of America, stayed here with his friend the wealthy merchant James Smith at his home Benvue.
