A northern suburb of Glasgow which was but a farm in the 19th Century, High Possil is located close to the border with East Dunbartonshire, a mile (1.5 km) west southwest of Bishopbriggs. Possil Loch lies to the northwest and it was in old quarries close by that the High Possil Meteorite fell on the morning of Thursday 5th April 1804. This was the first recorded meteorite in Scotland. Parts of this remain in the Hunterian Museum (Glasgow), while the remainder was distributed to research institutions around the world. A monument recording the event was unveiled on 20th May 2005 near the spot where the meteorite landed.
