A small district and larger electoral ward of SW Edinburgh, Moat lies between Chesser and Gorgie 2½ miles (4 km) southwest of the city centre, with the ward including all of the former and parts of the latter. The area comprises a preponderance of public housing, mostly dating from the late 1920s.
