A small area representing the junction between the districts of Gorgie and Dalry in W Edinburgh, Ardmillan is centred around Ardmillan Terrace and Ardmillan Place, 1¼ miles (2 km) southwest of the city centre. The area, and streets, are named after James Craufurd, Lord Ardmillan (1805-76), a noted Judge in the Court of Session. Located here is a notable public house, the Athletic Arms, also known as 'Diggers' because it was the haunt of grave-diggers from the nearby cemeteries; namely Dalry Cemetery lying to the northeast and North Merchiston Cemetery (formerly Dalry New Cemetery) to the southwest. In the 19th century a Magdalene Asylum for 'fallen' women lay on the west side of Ardmillan Terrace.
