Glen App

A significant gorge located close to the southern boundary of South Ayrshire in SW Scotland, Glen App lies 3 miles (5 km) south of Ballantrae and runs southwestwards to Loch Ryan at Finnarts Bay. It contains the Water of App and the A77 Trunk Road, together with a section of the Loch Ryan Coastal Path, which becomes the Ayrshire Coastal Path to the north.

Geologically, Glen App cuts its way through Ordovician greywackes deposited in the deep ocean 460 million years ago. These rocks are shattered by the Glen App Fault - a subsidiary of the Southern Upland Fault - with a displacement of up to 6000m occurring around 400 million years ago. This broken rock was more easily eroded and hence the depth of the valley.
