Monikie Country Park

A country park located to the east of the village of Monikie in SE Angus, 3 miles (5 km) to the north of Monifieth. Occupying an area of 56.7 ha (140 acres) of open water, the park also incorporates wildflower banks and woodlands. The water comprises three ponds, which were former reservoirs dating from 1847-53 and capable of holding 2.273 million cu. m (500 million gallons) of water. Along with Crombie Reservoir, which lies to the northeast, they served as the principal sources for the public water supply in Dundee until they were retired in April 1981 when the Backwater-Lintrathen scheme came fully on-stream. The Country Park was opened in August the same year by Tayside Regional Council but, with local government reorganisation, management passed to Angus Council.

Its Island Pond is an important breeding site for the Great Crested Grebe and rare wading birds can be spotted on the Denfind Bird Sanctuary. Fly fishing is available and the Ranger Service operates watersport courses.
