A classical mansion in the middle of King's Park, 3 miles (5 km) south of the centre of Glasgow, Aikenhead House was built in 1806 on the site of an earlier house by the architect David Hamilton (1768 - 1843) for John Gordon, a tobacco merchant. Hamilton extended the house by adding wings in 1823. The central block comprises two storeys in pink ashlar, with a contrasting Classical portico in yellow sandstone. The mansion was sub-divided into flats in 1986. The policies surrounding the house, which now form the park, were given to Glasgow Corporation in 1930 by the builder Sir John A. Mactaggart (1867 - 1956).
