Samuel's Cave

(Uamh Shomhairle)

A cave on the left bank of the Water of Nevis, 5 miles (8 km) southeast of Fort William, Samuel's Cave (Gael: Uamh Shomhairle). It was named after the infant heir to the MacSorlie chief who was saved by being brought here in the late 14th century following a feud with the Clan Chattan, who murdered his kin in their beds. Mrs Cameron of Glen Nevis House hid here from the Duke of Cumberland's troops in 1746 after the Battle of Culloden.
