Drum Castle

Located 2½ miles (4 km) west of Peterculter and a mile (1.5 km) north of the River Dee, the robust square tower at Drum was built in the late 13th Century. Drum was granted by Robert the Bruce (1274 - 1329) to his standard bearer, William de Irwyn in 1323. The property has changed little in the intervening time, although the architect David Bryce (1803-76) undertook some modernisation in 1871. Drum remained a possession of the Irvine family until 1975 when it was bequeathed to the National Trust for Scotland.
