Bullers of Buchan

A granite cliff on a headland which extends into the North Sea between North Haven and Robie's Haven 2 miles (3 km) northeast of Cruden Bay (Aberdeenshire). Here the sea rushes through a natural archway into a cavern with a vertical opening 30m (100 feet) high known as The Pot. In 1773 James Boswell and Samuel Johnson visited the Bullers which Boswell described as a "monstrous cauldron". Johnson remarked on the dramatic sight "which no man can see with indifference who has either sense of danger or delight in rarity." The coastline to the south was frequented by Bram Stoker, the creator of Dracula, who was inspired by the ruins of New Slains Castle.
