A summit on the boundary between East Ayrshire and South Lanarkshire, Stony Hill rises to 562m (1843 feet) 4 miles (6.5 km) south southeast of Muirkirk in East Ayrshire and 5½ miles (9 km) north of Kirkconnel in Dumfries and Galloway. Coniferous plantation forest covers much of its eastern slopes. On the 27th March 1945, a Hawker Typhoon aircraft crashed to the east of the summit, just above the present-day tree line, killing its young pilot, Robert Samuel Bellis of the Royal Canadian Air Force, who was on a training flight from RAF Milfield in Northumberland. Remnants of the plane are still to be found at the crash site, although the engine was recovered and is now displayed in the Dumfries and Galloway Aviation Museum in Dumfries.
