Knap of Howar

The site of a Neolithic settlement on the island of Papa Westray in the Orkney Islands occupied more than a thousand years before the Egyptians started building the Great Pyramid. Situated on the west coast of the island, a half-mile (800m) west of Holland House, its buildings are the oldest in Europe, built around 3700 BC. These comprise two houses excavated in the early 1930s and again in the 1970s.
