The alleged site of a decisive battle between the Picts and Northumbrians in 685 AD, Nechtansmere is located on low ground known today as Dunnichen Moss, situated at the foot of Dunnichen Hill, 4 miles (6 km) ESE of Forfar. Here Brude MacBeli, King of the Picts defeated Ecgfrith, King of Northumbria. The battle is thought to be commemorated on Pictish symbol stones at Aberlemno to the north.
