The Old Athenaeum, Glasgow

Built in 1886 by the architect J.J. Burnet (1857 - 1938), The Athenaeum sits in the heart of the city of Glasgow, at the junction of Buchanan Street and Nelson Mandela Square, and was built as a centre of adult education and recreation, essentially an intermediary between the Mechanic's Institute and the University. It acquired a music school in 1890, drama in 1950 and in 1968 became home to the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (RSAMD). Since the RSAMD moved to new premises in Renfrew Street, the building has been used as a hotel.
