Windyheads Hill

A summit of N Aberdeenshire, Windyheads Hill rises to 231m (757 feet) 2 miles (3 km) west southwest of New Aberdour and 2¼ miles (3.6 km) south southeast of Pennan. A radio navigation beacon was erected on the summit during World War II, designed as part of a network which guided bombers to their targets in continental Europe. An associated camp for its operation and defence built a quarter-mile (0.5 km) to the north. This facility closed in 1946 and was replaced by a radio station. It is now the site of an air traffic control beacon maintained by the National Air Traffic Service (NATS).
